Who'd Like A Cocktail? #165

With great power comes a really bad haircut.

Sunday afternoon + comics = Cocktails!

THE BOYS #63 - written by Garth Ennis with art by Russ Braun.

The crap really starts to hit the fan this issue as Wee Hughie comes face to face with a bound and gagged A-train, the killer of his girlfriend from way back at the start of the series. At the same time, the Frenchman and the Female attack one of Vought's lesser teams while the Vought exec is in attendance. And, over it all, the Homelander finally launches his assault on the US Government by having his army of superheroes attack the Pentagon.

Amidst all the fighting, the Vought exec (who finally has his name revealed after all this time!) calls a truce between his team and the Boys once he realises what the Homelander's up to. And to top it all off, Butcher's heading for his showdown with the Homelander.

Yet another superb issue.

GREEN ARROW #6 - written by Keith Giffen and Dan Jurgens with art by Ignacio Calero and Ray McCarthy.

Jurgens and Giffen's short run on Green Arrow comes to an end with this issue as Ollie faces off against Blood Rose and Midas, going after them with a plan and some help from his back up team. There's a slight twist to Blood Rose that, while I didn't see it coming, doesn't really add anything to this story either. From Midas's words at the end, though, it looks like Giffen and Jurgens will be taking their creations over to their forthcoming run on Superman. If you get taken down by Green Arrow, guys, I don't think you'll have much chance against Big Blue.

Not a bad issue, but as they were only ever caretakers, there was nothing there to really build on.

KIRBY: GENESIS - CAPTAIN VICTORY #3 - written by Sterling Gates and Alex Ross with art by Steve Scott.

Captain Victory's arrested for deploying the world killer and pleads guilty to General Cocytus's charge. Thankfully, Major Klavus steps forward and defends his friend and, despite the guilty plea, he's found innocent. He and his crew are then sent to the planet Ilili where six other ships, all sent by the General, have been lost in the last twenty four hours.

It seems obvious that the General is the bad guy here, possibly even Blackmass (the big bad guy who's been spoken of but never seen) himself or at least working for him. It's not terrible, but neither are there any real surprises.

STORMWATCH #6 - written by Paul Cornell with art by Miguel Sepulveda.

Harry Tanner's betrayal last issue leaves the Stormwatch HQ collapsing and falling out of hyperspace. To stop it, Jack Hawksmoor has to strike a bargain with the HQ's Daemonite artificial intelligence which, now that it's fully awake again, wants to kill them all. One bargain later and we have a team with a new leader, new members and a newly aware and belligerent HQ, a team which then has to beat Harry to secret caches of artifacts which are either dangerous or valuable. Those artifacts are indicated on a globe by symbols that look suspiciously like those of Captain Marvel / Shazam.

Sad to say this is Paul Cornell's last issue of Stormwatch and, after a couple of fill in issues, he'll be replaced full time by Peter Milligan. Not being a fan of Milligan's writing, I'm not sure how much longer I'll stick with this till-now excellent series.

But hey, I guess that's the excitement of the New 52 and trying something different, eh?

SWAMP THING #6 - written by Scott Snyder with art by Marco Rudy.

As the Parliament of Trees burns in South America, the Rot takes control of Abby Arcane, forcing her to become its avatar as Alec Holland was to become that of the Green before he refused the offer. Before her transformation is complete, she forces Alec to run from her before she's carried off to the Bone Kingdom. Alec attempts to have the Green transform him into Swamp Thing but is told it's too late, something which is driven home all too clearly by agents of the Rot arriving with a chainsaw.

Looking as gorgeous as ever, this is rattling along nicely.

And what made me smile:

Oh Midnighter, you charmer!
