Who'd Like A Coctail? #167

Because that's what heroes do, folks - bomb people using people as bombs

Only three comics this week:

BLUE BEETLE #6 - written by Tony Bedard with art by Ig Guara, J.P. Mayer and Mark Irwin.

Oh man. What is happening to this title?

Last time round, this was a fun book where the hero had a bunch of friends and a loving family who were all aware of his Blue Beetle status. Here we have the same kid who's Beetle identity is murderous and is responsible for turning one of his friends into an even more psychotic version of the Beetle. And in trying to battle it, Jaime ends up threatening to shoot his little sister (in front of their mother) and then slapping his best friend Brenda around before flying off to New York.

Seriously, I don't know who this version of Jaime Reyes is.

CAPTAIN ATOM #6 - written by J.T. Krul with art by Freddie Williams II.

Cap takes on the big red monster from last issue which turns out to be a giant rat mutated by the same sort of experiments that turned Cap into the big blue fella he is right now. Meanwhile, General Eiling is confronted by a couple of his airmen who were saved by Captain Atom and doesn't like it one bit. And at the end, Cap is able to help Ranita by healing her hand. And then we get that last page.

Not bad at all, this may have been slow to start but it's doing okay right now.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #6 - written by Peter J. Tomasi with art by Fernando Pasarin and Scott Hanna.

Honestly, I'm still not sold on the idea of Green Lanterns using guns to shoot bad guys. The Keepers are able to out-will the Lanterns but can't create defences tough enough to stop bullets? And poor old John gets to be the bad guy for all the right reasons once more, just as he did with Mogo pre-Flashpoint. The Wild Bunch of Lanterns romp in to save them, dropping a fear bomb - powered by two members of the Sinestro Corps - to take out the Keepers which, again, seems sort of wrong. How can the Lanterns claim to have the moral high ground when they're willing to use people as ammunition. Sure, they're killers (that's reiterated) but how are the Lanterns now any different from them?

And what made me smile:

But only just.
